Westminster Guide
Westminster is the classic starting point for London: Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park, and some of the city’s most recognisable views.
Westminster is best early in the day. Start here before the crowds build, then walk toward the river or St James’s Park.
Morning for fewer crowds around Big Ben, Westminster Bridge, and Parliament Square.

What to see in Westminster
Westminster works best when you treat it as a walking area, not just a list of famous landmarks. The sights are close together, but the crowds can slow everything down.
Big Ben & Parliament
Start with the most recognisable view in Westminster. The best photos are from Westminster Bridge and the South Bank side, but the area around Parliament Square is useful for orientation.
Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is one of the area’s major paid visits. Go inside if royal history, architecture, or British history matters to you. Otherwise, admire it from outside and keep the morning lighter.
Westminster Bridge
Westminster Bridge connects the classic Parliament view with the South Bank. Walk it slowly, look both directions, and use it as the natural link between Westminster and the riverside.
St James’s Park
St James’s Park gives Westminster a softer break. It is useful between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, especially if you want greenery and a slower pace.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is a natural end point for a Westminster morning. It works best as part of a walk rather than a single isolated stop.
Best ways to use Westminster in your trip
For your first morning
Start at Westminster Station, see Big Ben and Parliament, visit or pass Westminster Abbey, then walk through St James’s Park toward Buckingham Palace.
For a scenic walk
- Start at Westminster Station.
- Cross Westminster Bridge.
- Follow the South Bank path.
- Finish near Waterloo or continue east.
For a calmer visit
Choose one paid attraction only. Westminster Abbey is the strongest choice if you want history. Then keep the rest of the area as a walking route.
Start here, but do not stay too long.
Westminster gives you the London moment, but it is also one of the busiest parts of the city. See the landmarks, enjoy the history, then move naturally toward the river, the park, or South Bank.
